Department of Romance Languages of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Records, 1952-1980

The Department of Romance Languages was established in 1901 as the Department of Romance Languages and Literatures and became the academic department providing coursework in romance languages. In 1905, the name changed to Department of Romance Languages. Prior to 1901, romance and Germanic languages were taught in one department, known as the Department of Modern Languages. Records consist mainly of budget and financial records, including a number of files on departmental trust funds. There are also a few files pertaining to foreign language institutes for elementary and secondary school teachers held in the 1960s and supported by the United States National Defense Education Act of 1958.
